Troubleshooting
Camera access denied
Allow BoothX to use the camera and microphone on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Recent operating systems protect the camera and microphone: an app must be allowed to use them. If permission was denied, BoothX shows the Camera access screen: “BoothX needs the camera to work.” Click Allow: the system asks for access again, or tells you where to turn it on.
macOS
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera.
- Turn on BoothX in the list.
- For the videobooth, do the same in Microphone.
- Quit BoothX (
⌘Q) and relaunch it.
If BoothX doesn't appear in the list, launch it once from the Applications folder (not from the .dmg disk image) so that macOS asks the question.
After a BoothX update, macOS may ask for permission again: accept it.
Windows
- Open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera.
- Check that Camera access is turned on.
- Check that Let desktop apps access your camera is turned on: BoothX is a desktop app.
- For the microphone (videobooth): do the same in Microphone.
- Relaunch BoothX.
Some laptops have a switch or a physical shutter on the built-in camera, or a function key (Fn + camera icon) that disables it. Check them.
Antivirus software sometimes offers “webcam protection” that blocks unrecognized apps: allow BoothX in your antivirus.
Linux
- Your user must belong to the group that accesses video devices (often
video):sudo usermod -aG video $USER, then log out and log back in. - For Canon cameras over USB, USB access is required (
plugdevgroup on Debian and Ubuntu). - In a sandboxed environment (Flatpak, Snap), the camera must be allowed for the app.
Canon cameras
The system's “camera” permission applies to webcams. A Canon camera over USB is controlled differently: if it isn't visible, permission is generally not the cause. See Camera not detected.
The microphone
The microphone is used by the videobooth. Without permission, messages are recorded without sound: BoothX tells you. Allow the microphone just like the camera, then relaunch BoothX.
Still blocked?
- Restart the computer: a permission or a driver can stay stuck until a restart.
- Check that no other app (video conferencing, manufacturer's software) is using the camera.
- Contact support with your operating system and BoothX version (see Logs and reports to support).
