Getting started
Install BoothX on Windows, macOS or Linux
System requirements, download, installation and first launch on each system.
BoothX is a desktop app: you install it on your booth's computer and, once installed, it works without an internet connection. Your BoothX account is used to link the booth, sync your events and publish online galleries, but capture, editing and printing stay local.
System requirements
| Windows | macOS | Linux | |
|---|---|---|---|
| System | Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 | macOS 12 Monterey or later | Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 or later |
| Processor | x64 or ARM64, 4 cores recommended | Apple Silicon (M1 and later) or Intel | x64, 4 cores recommended |

Recommended hardware:
- a camera: a Canon EOS body over USB, or a simple USB webcam to get started;
- a photo printer (optional): DNP, Mitsubishi, Citizen, HiTi, Kodak, Sinfonia or Canon SELPHY;
- a touchscreen for guests, ideally a second screen for you.
The lists of tested models are published at boothx.org/compatibility/cameras and boothx.org/compatibility/printers.
Download
Go to boothx.org/download. The page detects your system and offers the right file:
- Windows:
BoothX-Setup.exe(x64) or the ARM64 version; - macOS: one
.dmgfor Apple Silicon and one for Intel; - Linux: an AppImage (x64), a
.debpackage (Debian, Ubuntu) and an.rpmpackage (Fedora).
Each file comes with its SHA-256 checksum: you can compare it with the checksum of the downloaded file (see below).
Install on Windows
- Run
BoothX-Setup.exe. - Follow the wizard: BoothX starts at the end of the installation.
- Plug in the camera and printer over USB: they're detected automatically.
“Windows protected your PC”: this message may appear the first time you run a downloaded app. Click More info, then Run anyway.
For printers, install the manufacturer's driver first: see Install your photo printer's driver.
Install on macOS
- Open the
.dmgfile. - Drag BoothX into the Applications folder.
- On first launch, right-click BoothX, choose Open, and confirm.
- Allow access to the camera (and the microphone if you use the videobooth) when macOS asks.
If you denied camera access by mistake, see Camera access denied.
Install on Linux
-
AppImage: make the file executable, then run it:
chmod +x BoothX.AppImage ./BoothX.AppImageOn some distributions, the AppImage also needs FUSE.
-
Debian / Ubuntu:
sudo apt install ./boothx_amd64.deb -
Fedora:
sudo dnf install ./boothx.x86_64.rpm
Your user must have access to USB devices (plugdev group on Debian and Ubuntu), otherwise the camera won't be visible.
Verify the downloaded file (optional)
| System | Command |
|---|---|
| Windows (PowerShell) | Get-FileHash .\BoothX-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 |
| macOS | shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/BoothX.dmg |
| Linux | sha256sum BoothX.AppImage |
The checksum shown must match the one on the download page.
First launch
On first start, BoothX shows the Sign in screen. You can sign in right away to link the booth to your account: see Sign in and link the booth.
Good to know:
- only one instance of BoothX runs at a time: launching the app again brings back the existing window;
- you can change the interface language, theme and zoom right from the sign-in screen;
- BoothX stores its data (local database, photos, logs) in the user data folder:
%APPDATA%\boothxon Windows,~/Library/Application Support/boothxon macOS,~/.local/share/boothxon Linux.
Update
What's new in each version is published at boothx.org/updates and in the account menu, under What's new. To update, download the new version and install it over the old one: your events, photos and settings are kept.
Uninstall
- Windows: Settings › Apps › Installed apps › BoothX › Uninstall.
- macOS: drag BoothX from Applications to the Trash.
- Linux: delete the AppImage, or
sudo apt remove boothx/sudo dnf remove boothx.
Uninstalling doesn't delete the data folder: delete it manually if you also want to erase your local photos and settings, after making a copy.
