Photo mosaic
The photo mosaic: a mural made of the guests' photos
How the mosaic works, the equipment, how an evening unfolds and what is free.
Mode being rolled out. The mosaic is gradually arriving in BoothX releases. Depending on your version, the screens and settings may differ from this description, or the mode may appear as “Soon” in the launcher.
The photo mosaic turns the evening's photos into a large mural: each guest photo becomes a small tile, tinted to match a piece of an image chosen in advance (a brand logo, a portrait of the couple, a monogram). Tile after tile, the big image appears on a board. At the end of the evening, the completed mural is the event's collective keepsake.
Like the other local modes, the mosaic works on the booth, without internet, and it is free: capture, tile calculation and local printing use no credits.
How it works
- Before the event, you choose the target image (the large final image) and the grid: number of columns and rows, tile size.
- During the event, each guest takes their photo just as in the photobooth. BoothX places the photo in a free cell of the grid and blends it slightly with the color of the target image at that spot.
- The booth prints the tile, with the cell number on the back or in the margin (for example a column letter and a row number).
- The guest (or a host) sticks the tile in its place on the gridded board.
- Depending on your settings, the guest also keeps their own photo print.
- At the end, the mural is complete; BoothX can also produce the digital version of the mosaic, to share or print in large format.
What you need
| Item | Role | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Camera or webcam | The guests' photos. | The same one as for the photobooth. |
| Printer | The tiles. | A dye-sublimation printer is fast and consistent; sticker paper makes placing tiles easier. |
| Gridded board | The base for the mural. | Foam board, PVC board or a rigid panel, gridded and numbered to the grid's dimensions. |
| Target image | The large final image. | A simple, high-contrast image: logo, monogram, silhouette. |
| A screen (recommended) | Show the mural's progress. | The booth's second screen, or a screen next to the board. |
How many tiles?
The number of tiles is worked out from your guests, not the other way around:
- count the number of expected photos (guests × participation rate × photos per person);
- choose a grid a little smaller than that number: it's better to finish the mural than to have gaps.
Cells still empty at the end of the evening can be filled by the booth: BoothX prints filler tiles using photos already taken. See Printing tiles and placing them on the board.
Where to find the mosaic
The mosaic opens from the launcher (Mosaic card). It works on the selected event: the grid, the tiles and the mural belong to that event. It can be the event's only mode, or be added alongside the photobooth in a multi-mode event.

Ideas
- Wedding: a portrait of the couple or their initials, given as a gift at the end of the evening.
- Corporate: the company's logo or slogan, displayed afterward in the offices.
- Trade show: a brand's mascot, built by visitors over the three days.
- Birthday: the age being celebrated, in big numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Does the mosaic replace the photobooth? No: it uses it. Every mosaic photo is also an event photo, visible on the Storage page.
Do I need a host? It's not required, but someone near the board makes placing the tiles faster and neater, especially early in the evening.
What if the mural isn't finished? BoothX can fill the empty cells with filler tiles. The digital version is always complete.
