Photobooth
The guest journey in the photobooth
The six steps of a session, from the welcome screen to the thank-you, and what the operator can adjust at each step.
Once the event is launched, guests use the booth on their own. Each session follows the same journey, and each step corresponds to a screen that you design in the editor.
The steps of a session
| Step | Editor screen | What the guest sees |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pause | Lock | “Booth paused”: the booth is waiting. “Touch the screen to unlock.” |
| 2. Welcome | Welcome | The event title and “Touch the screen to start”. |
| 3. Capture | Capture | The live preview, the countdown, then “Smile!”. Repeated for each photo. |
| 4. Layout | (template) | The photos are placed in the chosen template for a brief moment. |
| 5. Share | Share | The final layout, the “Scan to get your photos” QR code. |
| 6. End | End | “Thank you! See you soon”, then back to the welcome screen. |
The texts quoted are those of the default screens: you replace them with your own in the editor.
1. Welcome
The guest touches the screen (or the start button on the welcome screen) to begin. On a keyboard, Space or Enter do the same: a wireless trigger that sends one of these keys can therefore be used as a start button.
2. Capture
For each photo in the template:
- the camera preview appears (mirrored by default, like a bathroom mirror: it feels more natural for posing);
- the countdown runs: 3, 5 or 10 seconds depending on the setting;
- the photo is taken; the preview freezes briefly;
- after the delay between photos, the next photo begins.
The number of photos in a session is the number of slots in the template (up to 4). The countdown length can be set by the countdown widget on the Capture screen; otherwise, BoothX uses the setting on the Cameras page. See Shooting settings.
If a photo fails, BoothX retries once. If the camera still doesn't respond, the session is cleanly abandoned with the message “The photo could not be taken. Try again in a moment.” and the booth returns to the welcome screen.
3. Layout
The photos are placed in the template's slots, with their filters, frames and shapes. The layout is saved as a JPEG in the event's Prints folder, then sent to the printer if automatic printing is on. See Print during the event.
4. Share
The share screen shows the layout and the QR code for the event's online gallery. Guests scan it with their phone's camera to get their photos. The screen stays up for about 25 seconds, or until the guest moves on. See Share QR code and online gallery.
5. End
A thank-you screen, then the booth returns to the welcome screen for the next guest.
Transitions
Each screen can have an entry transition (Slide, Vertical slide, Fade, Zoom, Flip or None) and its duration. They are set in the editor, in the screen's properties bar.
Capture types
In the editor, each template has a Capture type: Photo, GIF, Boomerang or Video. The journey described here is for the Photo type. The animated types are being rolled out gradually; for video messages, use the Videobooth mode.
What the guest can't do
- Leave the event: this requires the exit gesture and, if you've set one, the booth code.
- Change settings: the app's keyboard shortcuts are disabled during the event.
- Print without limit: the Limit per guest on the Printers page caps the number of prints per session.
